Year 2 2026-27

Welcome to Badgers' and Foxes' page, where you can find regular updates on our news and learning!

Week Beginning 5th October

It is hard to believe we have almost completed half a term in Foxes and Badgers already!

These past few weeks have just flown by. We have enjoyed writing our very own alien stories and are now learning about Zig's diary. Over the next few weeks we will be learning lots of tools to help us to write fantastic recounts.

We have been super impressed with the progress the Year 2s are making with their reading and writing. We have some beautiful, joined handwriting happening as well!

Our Maths learning this past week has focussed on revising our addition and subtraction skills and this will continue for the next few weeks. It's really helpful to practise recalling bonds to 10 and 20, as well as practising addition and subtraction of larger 2-digit numbers. 'Hit the Button' is a really fun way to practice this.

We had some very special little visitors during our Science lessons last week. Firstly, Lily the tortoise visited us at the start of the week and helped us with our learning about reptiles. On Friday, Max's baby brother Louis visited us with his mum and we learnt all about what babies need from their adults. He was very well-behaved! Can your child tell you what all animals need for survival?

Our Harvest rehearsals have gone extremely well this week, with most of the children mastering their lines and musical instruments. Although a few nerves here and there, the children (and teachers!) are very excited to present their Harvest Performance to you next week!

In Computing, we are now learning about the Internet and how to stay safe online. We strongly encourage conversations about internet safety at home in order to keep our children safe online.

We have loved creating watercolour backgrounds in our Art lessons these past few weeks and creating line drawings of moving people. You will be able to have a look at all of our books when you come to our parent consultation evenings after half term and see for yourselves!

Have a lovely weekend...

We hope to see lots of you on Saturday at the Bake and Taste event between 10am and 12pm.

Week Beginning 21st September

The past few weeks have been full of exciting learning in Year 2!

We have enjoyed playing our recorders in Music and using drums, maracas and tambourines to play to the beat of the music. In Art we got creative, learning about the use of colour in portraits to show emotions as well as creating abstract portraits in the style of Pablo Picasso.

We have learnt some exciting dances during our indoor PE lessons and in History we took a walk over to the church to find out a little bit about its history. We also talked about the relevance of the War Memorial and paid our respects. Thank you to our lovely parents for your help to walk us over!

We have been learning the story of Zig the Alien in our English lessons, and we are now at the 'innovation' stage, making subtle changes to the story in order to make it our own. Ask your child to tell you their version!

In Maths, we are now coming to the end of our unit on 'Place Value'. We have learnt about place value charts and part-whole models to help us see the value of each digit in a number. We have compared amounts, as well as numbers, talking about which is greater or fewer and which are equal. Next week, we will start a new unit to build on our knowledge of addition and subtraction. In preparation for this, you might like to revise your number bonds to 10 and 20.

In Science, we have learnt how to identify and classify fish, reptiles and amphibians and we have learnt about their needs for survival. Next week, we hope to welcome a special visitor to help us learn more about what humans need for survival. Watch this space!

We are beginning to prepare for our Harvest celebrations and some of the Year 2 children will soon be bringing home some words to learn for our performance at St George's on the 13th October. Please help your child to learn to say their words clearly and confidently. If your child doesn't have a speaking part this time, they will be playing instruments to accompany the singing. They will have a speaking part at Christmas instead.

Thank you for supporting us at home with reading. Remember, we are aiming for a minimum of three reads at home per week. Please ensure that any reading you do with your child at home is recorded in their reading diary so that they can earn raffle tickets!

Enjoy the sunny weekend!

Week Beginning 7th September 2026

We have had a great start to Year 2!

We are so impressed at how well the children have settled in and are so proud of their progress so far.

ENGLISH - This week we started a new Talk for Writing unit all about Zig the Alien. We wrote some poetry as a class and have begun to learn the model text. Ask your child to tell you the story!

Next week, we will learn how adverbs can help us to describe settings and we will innovate some of the sentences in the story.

MATHS - So far, we have been learning about Place Value - how much each digit is worth in a range of numbers up to 99. We practised partitioning  numbers in different ways, using Base 10 to help us. For example, 25 can be made of 20 and 5, but also of 10 and 15 etc. Today we practised writing numbers in an expanded form, for example, 25 = 2 tens + 5 ones, 25 = 20 + 5. We definitely have some budding Mathematicians in Year 2 this year!

SCIENCE - We are learning about animals' needs for survival and this week we focussed on mammals and birds. Ask your child how we identify mammals and birds, and whether they have the same needs for survival.

In Art we enjoyed creating self-portraits and we learnt how to play the note 'b' on our brand new recorders in Music this week!

Our final swim before the pool closes was really lovely! The sun even came out for us...

We hope you've had a chance to watch the 'Meet the Teacher' presentation that was emailed to you on Wednesday. Do ask, if there's anything you are unclear about.

Have a lovely weekend!
