Reception 2026-27
Welcome to Hedgehogs' and Squirrels' page, where you can find regular updates on our news and learning!!

Week beginning 5th October
This week Reception brought home their first reading books! We hope you enjoy sharing these books with your child over the weekend. During the week, the children read their book three times as part of a group, focussing on a different skill each time. Please remember to return your book every Monday- thank you.
Phonics This week we learnt the sounds g o c and k, as well as the tricky word is. Next week we will be learning ck e u and r. Our tricky word will be I.
Maths We have been practising our counting skills in a variety of contexts, including counting large objects that are too big for us to move or line up when we want to count them. Next week we will be subitising (recognising an amount without needing to count the pieces individually, for example when you roll a dice with dos on) small quantities.
Understanding the World We have been learning to name and identify the different parts of our body. We will be discussing the importance of brushing our teeth and how this helps to keep us healthy.
Have a lovely weekend!
Our learning this week
Week beginning 21st September
Well done to all of Squirrels and Hedgehogs! They are now really into the swing of the Barnett Wood Way and demonstrating their understanding of the school rules. They continue to enjoy exploring the different areas in the classroom, as well as spending time outside. Today all children came home with their phonic folders in their bookbags. Please use these to practise the sounds we have learnt this week. These must be kept in bookbags as we add a new sheet every Friday- thank you.
Phonics This week we learnt the sounds s a t and p. Next week we are learning i n m and d. We are learning to recognise what they look like, hear them at the start of words and form them correctly when writing.
Maths We have been spotting groups of 1, 2 and 3 objects when part of a larger groups, for example on a plate of blueberries recognising that two are close together to make a group of two. Next week we will be learning about circle and triangles.
Understanding the World We have been discussing special celebrations to our family. We have then thought in more detail about birthdays and how we celebrate together. Next week our role play will have a birthday theme with decorations, party plates and cups and a birthday cake. We will also be encouraging the children to write and make birthday cards for whoever they like!
Reminders
The door opens at 8.30 am and shuts at 8.35 am.
If your child has borrowed any clothes, please ensure you return them to school as we are running very low! Thank you!
Week beginning 7th September
We are so proud of how well Squirrels and Hedgehogs have settled into their first week at school! We have been exploring our new classrooms, singing songs, listening to stories and spending time in the outdoor area. We took part in a tour of the school and enjoyed meeting the children in Year 1 and 2, seeing the school office and saying hello to Mrs Gibbard in her office. What a busy few days!
Thank you to those that came to Meet the Teacher on Wednesday. If you were unable to attend please see the slides here Meet the Teacher 2026 or use the link on the right of the page.
Next Week
Phonics We will be practising our listening skills through familiar songs.
Maths We will be using our matching skills to spot objects that are the same and different.
Thank you for all your support in helping the children to have a happy and positive start to school.
